Proposed Communication Structure
Communication plays a big part in the workings of StpmWiki. Below is the proposed communication structure.
Questions From Students
This is the most difficult aspect as MediaWiki wasn't built with this is mind. The options I can think of are these:
- Ask the students to leave questions at that particular section
- Prepare a space at the end of the page specifically for questions
- Prepare a special page at the end of the subtopic for questions
- Use the discussion page
Note that
- Option no 1 will offer potentially spot on questions, but will also potentially mess up the whole page.
- Option no 2 is most suitable for single page contents (that isn't part of a topic/subtopic).
- Option no 3 is most suitable for when the content covers a topic/subtopic.
- Option no 4 will use up the discussion page which should be reserved for discussion by editors. However, you can choose to use it for your projects.
Whichever way (or combination of) you choose to use, keep these in mind
- Leave clear instructions to the students where to leave the question (or even what type of questions you want to restrict it to)
- You can move/rearrange the questions to more appropriate places after that
- You can create FAQ's or just incorporate the questions directly to your content to prevent the same question being asked
- If there becomes too many questions, especially repetitive ones, or simply ones you don't really want to clog up the page, but you don't really want to delete it, you can sort of move to an 'archive' section and then either hide it or move it somewhere else (discussion page, a new archive page, etc)
The situation isn't ideal, as it forces the student to need to search where to post questions. But at the same time, it offers flexibility to suit different types of projects. To get the best out of it, a certain amount of time will be needed to manage the questions.
Writing/Reviewing/Editing Content
Discussions about writing/reviewing/editing the contents on a particular page should be held in the discussion page of that page itself (as per Wikipedia). New content/Revision/Changes can also be put there for review before committing it. For new pages, if you prefer to build up the content on a temporary site before committing to StpmWiki, just let me know, I can set it up for you.
Discussions about StpmWiki
General discussions about StpmWiki is best handled forum-styled in the Community Forum
Members are also free to use the forum to collaborate on their projects.
Comments & Feedbacks
General comments and feedbacks (and the occasional thanks, hopefully) from general public can go to the comments and feedback topic in the community forum. Initially, I wanted this to be on the wiki itself. But having disabled editing by anonymous users (to prevent spam), I have to divert it to the forum. Plus, most users will probably be more comfortable using forum software rather than wiki.
